FOOTBALL Fix this Blue Raider defense

How?

Seriously, what can they do different to improve right now? We have never really had a good D in the last 20 years. Yes, we have had some good players and played a few good games but what can we do right now to be better?

I'm just going to call it like I see it...

Defensive players aren't going to get Brent records

A good start would be firing the coaches. It is COACHING that is at least half of our problem. Literally every team we've faced all year has had the defensive line putting their hands up to disrupt passes each time Brent steps back in the pocket. We did it one time against UTSA.

Way, way, way more aggressive. Take some chances.
Play a little man on the corners and rush more that 3 or 4.
Quit play bend don't break.
Get tighter off the ball with the secondary and quit giving up a 8 to 10 yard cushion.
WRAP UP!!!

D-winns

The salient point here is, we laymen can see that these ideas ought to be at least TRIED but the coaches who get paid for this won't even attempt it.

You want better numbers on D right now? How about blitzing and stacking the box against run teams? It's obvious what UTSA was gonna do and we drop the LB's 6 yards back on a 3rd and 2.

In the 3rd quarter, we had one series where we stacked the box and we forced a 3 and out. The next series, we did that drop back crap and we got burned. Let them beat you with the pass but if UTSA couldn't run, they wouldn't have been able to do much. Stunt the blitz if you want but scare the crap out of the QB by showing numbers at the line. 5-6 or even 7. Get aggressive and it changes things. This drop back and let it happen crap is terrible. The players sit there and wait for the play to come to them. Terrible.

I would have took out a LB and replaced with a Safety or even DB and he would do nothing but get into the backfield. After about 2 TFL's you know they will run where he isn't. They would have to pass more which is what they don't do that well. Force it dang it. Stack the box and go.

It's coaching and scheme. That's all this is.

Here's my plan:

Give Nix and West their papers. Neither are providing any value whatsoever.

I'd re-assign Ellis if he is willing. He is recruiting coordinator and we do bring in some quality players and have made some good in-roads with high schools in Tennessee, Georgia, Florida. We recruit corners as good as anyone at our level, yet none of them are really all that great.

I'd retain David Bibee. He recruits well, and the safeties, despite being poor this year, are usually a bright spot for us.

Go out and hire the best DC you can find and hire. Offer him essentially a spot that is the HC of the defense, with authority to hire his own defensive staff (if he wants to can Bibee/Ellis, that would be fine). That should attract some quality candidates. Don't go cheap - there's too much riding on this. Make sure it's somebody with a philosophy that's not bend and break. Get aggressive. We have enough talent that we shouldn't be that bad or have to play such a vanilla scheme.

JMHO.

Maybe Stock can offer up $100K of his annual salary to go to a new DC to enhance the offer?

We can't blitz because our corners can't cover.
Our corners can't cover because they are in coverage way too long waiting for the d-line to get pressure. The best corners on Earth can only cover for so long if there isn't any pressure on the qb

You know Nix makes $300K a year right? He's the 2nd highest paid DC in the conference. If they made a change (big if IMO) they could certainly entice a good DC with that kind of dough .

Speaking of Nix, what the heck happened to this guy.

He was a multi-year Broyles award finalist with defenses in the top 20 nationally for quite a few years. Everywhere he went he had monster defenses - SoMiss and South Carolina and even at Ole Miss until things went south under Houston Nutt.

I thought hiring this guy was quite the coup for Stock and a program at our level, yet the defense has been bad virtually every single year.

West is just mailing it in and collecting paychecks and that's obvious, but there's no reason Nix shouldn't be coordinating a quality defense.

The DL is just not there this year. Not much in the way of pressure at all. Next year will be worse unless we get two juco DT's. How is that looking. Signing period is within two weeks?

I knew he made 300K, I was being a bit sarcastic since he forfeited 100K for full cost of attendance.

He didn't forego squat. Stock traded $300,000 for $2.4MM in three more years guaranteed at $800,000 plus. That's a net gain of $2.1MM by my calculations. Would you take that? I would.

Nothing we can do to be honest. It's a personnel problem due to poor recruiting efforts over the last several years. Nix didn't wake up one morning and forget how to coach a defense. His style is actually a very successful one for many teams across the country but the difference is they have the personnel to run it. Nix believes in lining up in a basic zone or man and beating the guy in front you. No fancy schemes or trickery and very few wrinkles. He'll throw in an occasional blind side blitz or a run blitz but other than that it's as conservative (and predictable) as a defense can be. Again, his style is successful across the country but it's with teams who have the players to do it, specifically a strong defensive line that wins in the trenches.

At the end of the day it boils down to winning at the line of scrimmage. It truly is that simple. A dominant defensive line will not only win you football games, it will win you championships. A dominant defensive line just destroys the heart and soul of the opposing offense because it allows the defense to dictate the terms of the game and put them in uncomfortable situations (where they typically fail). If you let the other teams offensive line control the game then it's over. They run plays they are comfortable running and are almost always going to be successful. Every FBS opponents offensive line we've faced this year has taken a large $hit on our defensive line and that's why we've had to try and outscore every opponent we have faced.

Winning on the defensive side of the ball is not rocket science. In fact, the simpleness of it all makes the situation that much more frustrating. It all boils down to piss poor recruiting and coaching on the defensive line which has allowed opposing offenses to dictate the terms week in, week out.

I'd be happy with just stopping a basic run up the middle for no gain! Lately, a 3 yd gain is a win for our defense.

Something I noticed - how can we have no DL committments in the 2017 recruiting class?

A solid player would have a good chance at playing time (if not fighting for a starting position).

It seems that we would be focusing on a weak link. Or maybe it is telling that we are getting committments at other positions, but not DL.

I've been confused about this for the last couple of months. What the heck is going on?

Recruiting big, talented defensive linemen is probably one of the most difficult things to do at the FBS level. We might be waiting on some SEC scraps that fall through or something.

We really need some junior college players at the position but with our miss rate on JC players maybe it's better to just go the high school route and suck it up for another 2-3 years.

I think we need to look for guys at DT that we can redshirt and get weight on them. Maybe consider a few of those o lineman should consider a move to DT
