Earle: We had had the flu all week.
Our team was flu-ridden and I wouldn't say anything about it until after
the game and if we had lost, I wouldn't had said anything because it
would have sounded like I was making an excuse. But they just reached
down and did it. The thing about that team was they could win at
different tempos, 50s or the 60s, or they could win at Bowling Green
102-95 because Western couldn't stop us and we couldn't stop western. It
was the greatest college basketball game I've ever been associated
with. It was a great game. It was just a great game by two really good
college basketball teams. In fact, some people at Western said it was
one of the greatest games they've ever had in EA Diddle Arena.
What did the win at WKU do for the program?
Earle:
We felt it was special. Up to that time, for them to win at that fast
of a tempo, they could overcome a lot of things. We weren't that deep
really. We had about a seven-man rotation and they just played hard.
That was a big win. For years and years, ever since the inception of the
OVC - in 1952 I think we joined - the Kentucky schools had controlled
the league. Their basketball was just better than ours. Then all of
sudden our basketball got pretty good. That win at Western just sealed
the deal and sent the message out that we were ready to play.
