Phil Steele Predictions and Tidbits

Will post interesting things here as I come across them from Phil Steele's 2024 magazine. For those that don't know, he is typically the best prognosticator for the upcoming CFB seasons.

He has MT near dead-last, #9. Kennesaw State is #10!

He does not like the fact that we lose so many starters + bring in all new coaches + don't have the easiest schedule in the world. MT returns only 1 starting OL and zero returning starters on the DL. He does not foresee many wins for us.

He predictably has it Liberty, WKU, and Jax St. in that order but surprises with picking FIU at #4. I do think he's onto something here with FIU returning 14 total starters, 8 on offense, and a dynamic QB/RB combo. I've got my eyes on the FIU/Indiana game with the Golden Panthers catching +20.5 right now. Would love to see that number move to 21.

Jakobe Thomas is the projected starting Strong Safety for UTK.

If anyone doesn't have the magazine and has any questions about this year's predictions let me know

FOOTBALL Wide Receiver Preview

WR is a massive question mark in my opinion. We've had some really good guys these last few years at the position in my opinion and many are gone. Losing Metcalf to Marshall hurts, he is such a good player and is coming into his prime. He would have been a huge weapon for us. Not happy about that. He's gonna go off at Marshall this year if utilized properly.

One positive is, with the new offense we shouldn't need as many studs at WR as before. I doubt we really go 4 or 5 wide that often, so a rotation of 5-6 dependable guys should be enough. Still, I'm struggling to find those 5-6 studs on our roster. I foresee TE Holden Willis getting a lot of balls thrown his way this year. We'll probably see another TE with a break-out type season as well (Taharin Sudderth is one hell of an athlete, keep him on your radar)

Some of these transfers are gonna have to step up for us and should have real and immediate opportunities to become bonafied starters. I like the Central Arkansas transfer Myles Butler a lot.

BB RECRUITING MT vs Kansas St @ neutral site

Not sure on venue for UCLA game. I thought Matt had mentioned (outside of our taping) it would be a neutral site contest. That would be huge having all of our non-con games against Top 25 teams all be neutral site.

I do know the Princeton game will be in New Jersey more than likely in early December.
That will be great. I live in New Jersey about an hour north of Princeton and am excited to attend, already planning to bring a group with me!

FOOTBALL Another Commit

McGuire donates a huge amount. He owns the area McDs and helped start RaidersRising.
I know The Boulevard does as well.

Speaking of McGuire as the local McDonald's owner. Just saw the local McDonald's sponsored billboard on I-24 "WELCOME TO BLUE RAIDER COUNTY" featuring Jalynn Gregory. He is definitely invested.

FOOTBALL Running Back Preview

I like our RB's, but even they will need decent blocking for an effective ground game. Not to get too far ahead, but Ole Miss will be a good early comparison to the Alabama game last year. While we will have little chance against a probable top 5 team in Ole Miss I'm hoping for improvement in the trenches up front for the Raiders, & that we won't experience the same early season debacle as last year. If we can hang for 3 quarters where we provide relatively decent protection for Nick & some decent blocking for the RB's I'll be pleased.
A game like that I hope for 2 things. No injuries, & to come out with our heads held high. If we can do that then I'll feel pretty good about how we can compete the rest of the year.
