Thoughts on Grammer?

I think I have been a pretty staunch supporter of Grammer. I like what he can do with his feet and felt he looked like a better thrower in the spring. I have been pleasantly surprised by little Stock and can see why he was chosen. Still, I was disappointed not to see Grammer get more snaps in the last two games. Just felt like it was the right thing to do. After what I have seen from AG's family and friends on twitter and in the stadium, I wonder if there aren't some attitude issues that are costing him snaps. I know he said the right things and it is not him directly but I don't think they would do this if he told the not too. I hope I am wrong. I like the kid but he needs to shut this stuff down. Ridiculous to see this stuff from people wearing Blue. There is more if you search on twitter.

I would prefer we ignore stupid crap like this and not allow it to create issues that shouldn't be issues. We turned the ball over too many times and honestly allowed too many big plays on defense. We have enough problems we need to work on without rumor mongering creating unnecessary drama. Those signs and all that crap is childish, and as a fan base I hope we get the message across that we aren't going to be brought down to that level.

That said I was incredibly happy to see him make that touchdown pass at the end of the game. I know that meant a lot to him.

I have not had a chance to watch the 2nd half of the Bama game but I was impressed by Brent's poise, arm strength (save the interception, ball was slightly under thrown), decision making, and leadership. After seeing Brent in action and comparing him to Grammar last year, I can see why the decision was made to go to Brent now.

There may be a time or two that Brent's inexperience hurts MT but Brent has everything you look for in a FBS QB IMO...

#cueswileyresponse ;)

Agreed.......Brent appears to have a little more ability than Grammar. Grammar is a better runner, but I am absolutely loving Brent slinging the ball around the field. His throws have the zip that Grammar's do not. Should help more to open up the run game. A lot tougher to stack the box for the run when Brent is back there. Brent has earned the right to be ahead of Grammar.

Hopefully, that is just some hometown folks expressing displeasure. Sadly, some of that is quite distasteful. No need for that around the program. IMO, Brent Stockstill is incredibly impressive. I hope A Grammer is not caught up in any divisiveness around the team. I imagine there will be opportunities for Grammer to get some playing time. A couple of really good QBs could really be helpful towards MT possibly having a really successful season.

I thought Grammer should have played sooner in the Charlotte game. No reason to risk Brent's health and let's see what Grammer can do. He hasn't thrown the ball hardly at all during the time he has been on the field. Mostly scrambles. Need to see him throw it around a bit to be better able to compare the two.

Just my 2 cents but IMHO Grammer should have been in each of the three games much earlier. At least two or three offensive series.

Before each of the first two games Stock (the coach) stated that both QBs would play but Grammer was only given PT long after the games were decided. Grammer had to have been upset with his limited PT at Bammer, especially when Stock (the player) wasn't playing well in the 2nd half.

It's hard to get in the coaches head and understand his motivation but had the (new) starter been my son, the back-up been last year's starter, no other QBs of note on the squad, and the unknown of the future (injuries, transfers, etc.) I sure would make more of an obvious effort to keep everyone happy. Maybe that's why I'm not a coach.

I too am confused I don't have a problem with Brent starting( he has done well so far). I truly am shocked that Brent is playing as long as he has been with the scores being the way they are. I don't understand why Austin hasn't been inserted earlier. I will be ticked off if we are winning by 40+ points and our starting QB is in the game and gets hurt. I understand conditioning is a factor and we wont ring up 70 every game and at some point Brent will have to play a full 4 quarters but I say lets just cross that bridge when we get there

i have no comment. i suggested this might be an issue before the season started and my thoughts were dismissed.

If Grammer were to transfer it would have to be one of the he graduates early and transfers somewhere that has a graduate program that MT doesn't have scenarios right? Kind of how we get McCarron. Or he could go FCS I guess.

We can't make in-game decisions based on the feelings of a backup QB and his family. Grammer had every chance to win the starting job and he did not. If he is unhappy then leave or beat out the guy in front of you.

Stock job isn't to make his players happy. It's to do what's best for the team.

From my viewpoint, Stockstill is a much better passer and decision maker than Grammer.

Can anyone think of a transfer that got beat out for a job, left, and elsewhere became a better player than the guy who beat him out?

Offhand, I can't.

I get the point that its important to have quality depth and a solid backup option in case of injury.

But you're never going to make 85 guys on the roster happy, and you shouldn't use your gameday decisions to that end, either.

Could AG gotten into the Charlotte game earlier? Probably. Yet, Brent is a freshman, starting his 3rd game - this is a guy that really needs all the live fire snaps he can get.

I don't disagree in a typical situation but given the circumstances I think giving a few extra bones to the guy you benched for your son would build good will for all involved. He may have his reasons but it seems kind of headish to me to say publicly both players are going to get to play and then not really do it. We have played 3 games all of which were routs. Grammer has gotten to throw 6 passes total all season. Just feels like we are doing the kid wrong. I guess it doesn't matter since we seem to have our starter, but there may come a day we need him and don't have him. Plus, I would think this type of not following through with what you say could be used against us in recruiting. He should have never said he was going to give both a chance to play if he didn't mean it. It's not like there wasn't ample opportunity. Lil Stock could learn more from snaps in practice than against charlotte and JSU's 2s and 3s. The getting Stock reps excuse just doesn't hold water

Cam Newton. Was Tebow's backup. Left and went to a junior college for a year, then to Auburn, won a national title while there, first pick in the NFL draft, and remains starting QB for the Carolina Panthers while Tebow can't even crack a roster and remains an ESPN analyst.

There are many more, especially players at non-skill positions. We had a LB back in the McCollum era who wasn't starting here, transferred to Alabama, and was able to work his way onto the field there more often. Darren Mustin was his name. He eventually became a starter on defense his senior year while at Alabama, was defensive player of the week for Alabama in their win against Arkansas his senior year.

Lose him to who!? It won't be a division 1 program.

Doesn't matter if he ends up at FBS, FCS, or on his couch. He's a legit back up who could serve a purpose if something were to happen to our starter and him leaving would leave us with basically no back up QB.

Again, I postulated this could be a problem before the season started (especially if we played bad) and lookie here, here we are discussing it and we are not even playing bad..LOL... Stock Sr. obviously isn't helping the situation either when he says both QB's will play and then won't even let Grammar into the game for mop up duty when we are ahead by 40+ points against hapless opponents like Jax St. and Charlotte. If Grammar does end up bailing then our staff has nobody to blame but themselves for mishandling the situation (and no, before you go trying to put words into my mouth, I'm not saying start Grammar..... but don't publicly say he's going to play and then not let him play. that's making a difficult situation worse and f'ing with the kids mind)

As Wiley said it doesn't really matter but he has been here four years don't assume he can't graduate and play FBS. There are schools that would like to have him I'm sure. Who knows? He could decide he wants to concentrate on his golf game.

I don't know what is going on behind closed doors, so for now we will just have to trust CRS is doing the right thing. I just think it looks bad and I could easily see Grammer becoming disillusioned. I think that could be bad for the program.

Newton was booted from Florida for stealing a laptop and left facing 3 counts of academic cheating.

Is the reason lil stock is playing more is to get comfortable, since he hasn't played until this year in 3 years and grammar had all of lost year. Who really needs all the reps more lil stock or grammar

I really like the content that Aldo is delivering. There seems to be much more and seems to in touch with what fans are talking about. Worth the $7.

It seems to me that some people on this board are looking for something to complain about. We haven't had to complain about much so far this season which is a great thing yet some fans seem like they are trying to manufacture stories/rumors.

What's sad is that if it wasn't for some fans spewing off at the mouth this would be a non-issue.

It will only look bad if we end up not winning. Not saying it is right or wrong but it is a risk Big Stock is taking in the public view, that's for sure.

Some of you are conveniently forgetting how badly Grammer played in the last half of the season. It is not like we benched Peyton Manning. We may have several players on the roster now (who played QB in high school) who could deliver the same results as he did the last half of 2014.

I'll say this, Austin has been the the consummate professional through all this. I don't think that can be said enough.

Do you know the deal with his family and/or friends and the signs they were photographed holding?

Well, I thought it was very poor taste for those fans to take their frustration out on Brent, who has done nothing but work his a$$ off to contribute to this team. Grammer got a fair shake but after FIU and UTEP last year, he wrote his own ticket. In camp, his production slumped and Brent's production improved a lot. I mean damn, support the team. What little support we have needs to be united.

Brent got the opportunity to play because he earned it. His dad didn't give him squat. 891 yards and 9 TD's vs. 2 INT's in 3 games proves that the decision was correct. I'm a fan of AG too and will support either one but Brent has been the right guy and I'm liking the results so far.

Well when you've got family and friends involved, they're Austin Grammar fans first and foremost and MT fans second. In reality they didn't give two shits about our program until their son/friend came here. So you've really gotta overlook their stupidity and blind support and realize they're really not MT fans, they're Austin Grammar fans dressed in Blue.

Nevertheless, they can provide ample distraction, especially with our fan base being so small. I do think coach Stock is doing himself (and Austin Grammar + cronies) a disservice when he says both will play and then never plays AG. It's really bad for a head coach to publicly say one thing and then do another, especially when it involves the roster. Either shut up and keep your roster plans private or if you're going to spill the beans, then you better follow through.

Coach Stock never said they would play equal time, he said they both would play. Why can't some of you just enjoy the good things that are happening instead of finding something to bitch about! I have come to believe that some of you live to be negative & miserable! The kids & team are handling this ... Let it go, be happy that we are doing good & support the team & coaches! I for one am loving this team & if it's lil Stock leading the team or Grammer...support them, don't start controversies that don't exist! Go Blue

There are plenty of us enjoying and relishing the fact that we have a great team this year, though our difficult schedule does concern me that our record won't reflect the talent of this team. It would be naive to ignore the fact that there are some disgruntled fans out there over the QB situation and understandably so considering last years starter was unseated by the coaches son who is a freshman.

If you think our fan base likes to complain, you need to come spend some time in Columbus Ohio and listen to these buckeyes fans on the radio / local commentators. You would never know Ohio St. has won like 15 straight games and is still a heavy favorite for the national title with the way people talk around here. You think the Austin Grammar and Stockstill situation is divisive? LOL. I dare you to even load an Ohio St. message board or local radio station and listen/read the retarded Cardale Jones vs. JT Barrett convo's.

Put on your big boy pants. In high level sports (FBS football / NFL) there's always going to be people wanting to get better, regardless of how much success you've had. If there was no desire or care to improve, this team wouldn't be competitive in the least bit and wouldn't be half as good as they currently are.

I have not spoken to ANY fan that is disgruntled about the QB situation. Most are happy with the improved play at that position to date. There have been other starters from last year unseated but don't think you have complained about those.

I haven't seen anybody second guess the choice of starter at this point. I think that is pretty clearly the right choice. Of course qb gets more attention especially under the circumstances. Most of those other players are still getting plenty of snaps too. The only starter from last year that I can think of getting unseated was Singletary and he started game one and is getting a lot of snaps. I am thrilled with the season. If being concerned about the optics is whining and complaining then so be it. I just find the way it's being handled to be odd and thought it was worthy of discussion.

In fairness, comparing MTSU and Ohio St is a little like comparing apples and oranges. Despite all the outrage and anger with some amount of fans, Ohio St has no attendance problems except how to fit everybody in on gameday. They don't have much of a financial support problem either. National brand recognition? No problem there. Recruiting? Not even a problem, which 5-star recruits will they take is their problem. MTSU on the other hand..... I'd say MT does need a more united fanbase when and where possible to continue to build the program.

All in all, I agree with some of the other comments about it's a pretty good start of the season when snap count of the #2 QB is the only point of contention. I do admit, I thought A Grammer would have come in a few series earlier in a couple of the games. Maybe coach stock is wanting exp for the freshman QB before the grind of conference play??? Whatever the case, it's almost a political decision at some point given the circumstances. I would like MT to keep a decent #2 QB like Grammer. In fairness to coach stock on this issue, he has said playing time this season. It's only been 3 games thus far. It will be further along this season as things play out before it rises to the level of being a concern much less a big deal.

Lastly, lil Stock has impressed me tremendously. I imagine there will be some adversity before him this season, but he appears to have some serious skills.
