The heart of the problem with MT Football (long)

i don't believe he has a show cause. hell we need to up our recruiting game. he would be an instant upgrade probably get some big donors to give just to get him a job. ain't he friends with the touy's
Him and Matt Insell are good friends.

You are right. He didn’t have a show cause. If he was hired as a HC this year, he would have been suspended for the first 2 games.

He’s a cheater and a hypocrite. The only reason recruiting was better is because his staff cheated. That’s why Ole Miss was on a 2 year bowl ban and probation. No thank you.

You want to bring in a guy in that was just busted for major NCAA violations, disgraced, and was banging escorts or setting them up for recruits?

Yes. Yes I do. I might be in the minority here but I see nothing wrong with prostitution. I will admit it's a bit cheesy he has a wife and kids and tried to play the whole Good-Southern-Christian-Family game, but whatever. Prostitution is legal in many countries, including our very own state of Nevada. If two consenting adults want to get down and exchange some $$$$, who the F cares?

With regards to cheating, he knew what he had to do at Ole Miss to win. Everybody in the SEC cheats. No doubt in my mind about that. I don't really care about what happened at Ole Miss. I care about what happened at Ark. St. because that's the level we are on.

Freeze did just fine at Arkansas State and know's what it takes to win at this level. I'm sure he's learned a lot from his Ole Miss experience and is itching for another chance. I'd love to give it to him. I would hire him in a heartbeat if I were AD, no questions asked.

In the spirit of the first post that started this thread, I do respect and appreciate that coach stock has brought a certain level of respectability and stability to the program. Although it may be a harsh business reality, but college football teams and programs are mostly judged on what you do on 12 Saturday afternoons in the fall. Similar to coach stock's approach to day to day operations of the program, the program is steady and stable. Particularly if you define steady and stable as about 6 or 7 wins each season. Right in the meaty part of the bell curve. Average. Or another word, mediocre.

Despite coach stock's decency as a person, he just isn't getting it done for MT as judged by those Saturday afternoons in the fall. Batting around .500 in football just is not going to build a fanbase. Particularly here in the Southeast. All of this is evidenced by one of the most important measures, attendance. MT is not building a fanbase. Actually, coach stock is seeing the direction of the fanbase go in the opposite direction of what is necessary. Mediocrity will do that. Fans, especially in this area, want to see a competitor for championships.

The start of this season has demonstrated thoroughly that recruiting is a big problem for coach stock's staff. Sure, there usually are a number of underlying factors to most any problem. It's still a valid observation nonetheless. MT just does not have the type of athletes to compete at the level most of us would like to see. Vandy pushed MT around. Sadly, there did not appear to be too much of a difference between MT and UTM. UGA looked like they were going up against scout team freshman practicing through their redshirt year.

I really do not know what is going to happen with coaching and MT. Coach Stock may be here for years to come. Maybe he is fired in a couple of years, or maybe he retires soon. It's my opinion that him retiring may not be as outlandish as it sounds to some. Some of coach stock's public comments this week were quite revealing. Not that he suggested he was retiring. His comments on reevaluating the team and direction of things after the first 3 games sounded significant in my opinion. My point, the natural consequences of mediocrity are starting to be realized. Poor attendance has finally necessitated MT to play big money games vs top teams to make up for lack of ticket sales etc. Even the talk of goals of just getting bowl eligible this early in the season were revealing. Retiring may look a lot more appealing as he realizes he can't cruise to bowl eligibility vs poor performing opponents.

What ultimately happens, I don't know. After the start to this season, I am concerned that something akin to a 4-8 record could be a possible outcome.

The last couple of years has brought about circumstances that I'm thinking a new AD would be preferential.

Regarding McPhee, I'm somewhat torn. The buildings on campus have started to catch up to all the growth in enrollment from over the years. I really do not like McPhee getting all buddy-buddy with the Chicoms. I don't trust them. The Chicoms are getting buddy-buddy with universities all over the country from what I hear. Given the Chicoms penchant for stealing intellectual property, I don't like them getting such preferential treatment from the Pres of the University. Of course, I really dislike how McPhee has a huge blind spot for the university name and brand. The positive for McPhee is that he does appear to support athletics with his time. When someone invests time, it's not just lip service. Given that some university prez, deans, chancellor, etc etc virtually ruin their school's athletics programs, McPhee isn't that bad. Could he be better? Sure. Could MT do worse? Absolutely. As of this moment, a new AD would be a positive development.

His two years at Arky St as OC and HC he beat us 96-43.
45-19 at our place.

You think he just started cheating at Ole Miss?

Maybe I’m too close to it, but the self-righteous prick was calling folks out saying “if you have evidence of cheating come forward” and then he was busted lying about it.

And the strong indication that everywhere he was on a recruiting trip, an escort was called. Rumor is he may have been getting escorts for recruits. In a world of cheaters, to get busted that bad and to be a hypocrite...I can’t support that.

Reading all the posts and remembering the last 20 years of 1A/FBS, can sum it up with saying its “culture”. Culture defines who we are. Our core values. Our ambition. Our legacy. Everything. Our name is Middle Tennessee and sadly our sphere of engagement falls far well short of that geography in the 20 years of major college football. One proof is our flagship station cannot be heard clearly after sunset beyond the Veterans Parkway Kroger or Exit 89 on I-24. Also, have listened to WDUC FM in Southern Middle Tennessee in my car
and its signal is weak in Fayetteville not more than 22 miles by road from transmitter in Moore County. That’s not great for Southern Middle Tennessee. There’s never a problem anywhere in Middle Tennessee to listen to UT or Alabama Football. Every town up and down the FM and AM dial offers at least one UT station—from rebuilding years to National Champions (1998) they are there. Another is signage at businesses on game day, one cannot tell if there is game day today—no deep school spirit. Yes, one may see a few small 18 inch game day signs close to campus, but one has to be very perceptive or it’s missed. Maybe FCS is a better fit with our budget and culture? Beginning to see that. We’re competing with many worthwhile interests and people are speaking with their absence and lethargic on our product. Think we have to seriously look at the way forward after this year, especially if we don’t win or participate in the C-USA Championship in football. 13 years is a long time with the modest results we have. Hope this it’s a successful year for the coaches and team. Our next 3 weeks will speak volumes to our successes or failures for 2018 and what must be done to boost the health of athletics.

Great post: I can't tell you how our lack of AM-FM coverage for our athletics pi--es me off. We lose WMOT (I'd like to summarily fire who ever made that decision) while both WKU and Memphis have entered the mid-state market with their games. Have you looked at the WKU radio network? And we can't be heard clearly in adjoining counties. Shows several things: The PTB don't think radio presence is important or advertisers can't be found to broadcast throughout the mid-state (and beyond) or MT should be happy with support only from Rutherford Co.

As an aside from someone who should know: Does WDUC have pre and post game shows or just the game, and do they also carry men's BkB?

WDUC carried the pre game show last week and the brief post game comments. The post game call that follows the show was not aired. WDUC signal is strong in Shelbyville and Tullahoma, but doesn’t go far west clearly to places like Columbia. City coverage strength is important; for a typical fan will not struggle to pick up a MT game. I have difficulty with WGNS AM at night on a Bose Wave Radio; their FM has interference at times where I live. My GE Superadio does the job, but how many fans have one? Not sure about Basketball coverage.

Thanks for the reply. Soon after leaving WGNS coverage after the UGA game I was able to pick up UDUC but they were already playing music when I was sure the post-game show should have been on. IIRC several years ago The Duck started carrying MT FB but I was very disappointed to find out they weren't carrying BkB when I wanted to listen to an away game while in the area. I was able to move my location and get WMOT at the time but no more. I'm somewhat glad that being able to watch/listen to MT games is no longer appointment media time.

I agree that if two adults want to exchange "favors" for money then they should be able to. I do no think they should, but that is none of my business. I do have issues with you not caring about him cheating because "Everybody in the SEC cheats." Who cares what everyone else does? If it is against the rules it is against the rules. If you do not like the rules work to change them, but as long as they are the rules you should play by them. So basically what I get from what you are saying is hire whoever to come in here and lie, cheat, whatever as long as we win football games? There is so much wrong with that outlook.
