I agree with JT except I would rank the 2001 Vandy game above the '05 game. First time we played them since moving to 1-A. That game was YUGE.

Yeah, I definitely agree with you on that. I wrestled with it and I think why I put the 2005 team there because it was Jay Cutler led and Vandy was undefeated when we played them and I think they were about to be ranked.

Football:
1. Alabama- 2002
2. Vandy 1- 2001
3. Vandy 2- 2002
4. Vandy 3-2005
5. Georgia Tech 2012

Football has no clear cut number 1 IMO. I'll go with:

1) Vandy 2001
2) USM NO Bowl 2009
3) Maryland 2009
4) Georgia Tech 2012
5) Vandy 2005

Hoops:

1) Michigan State 2016
2) Kentucky 1982
3) Minnesota 2017
4) Florida State 1989
5) WKU 1982 OVC championship

I don't go back to the 80s personally but I've heard enough to consider myself a decent historian of MT hoops. Curious if anybody would rank the USSR exhibition win as a top 5 win?

I would. But hell, I don't think our basketball media guides even mention it...

That was in the 88 portion of the 88-89 season and the same squad that beat FSU in the first round of the NCAA tourney. I consider the win over the USSR squad better than the NCAA win.

Why are some saying Maryland 2009 and not 2008 - in 2008, I had that same feeling when we beat Vandy in 2001. The beauty of 2008, it was at home.

Also 2008 Maryland team beat no. 25 Cal the following week and they won 8 games and went to a bowl and won it too.

GT also went to a bowl the year we crushed them and beat the crap out of USC. That's why I had those in my top 5 and GT at no.1. The GT game was at their house and on TV and we had a national ESPN player of the week and got tons of press from that game.

Every Vandy team we beat was crappy except the 2005 team which was undefeated at 4-0 when they faced us and had a NFL first round draft pick at QB who played in a superbowl and still plays now. That's why I had them lower and didn't mention the other 2 wins. If you go top 10, we can put them in. I think 2013 Marshall and last year's LaTech win were very good wins too. Those were very good teams. Better than any of the Vandy teams and 2009 Maryland team.

My justification for it is based in part on what the win meant to the season. The win in 2009 allowed us to get to 10 wins for the year, plus the win occurred right at the end on a huge final drive and walk-off field goal. In 2008, we ultimately didn't do anything with the win and finished with a losing record.

My bad. He's been Vandy's best QB that they ever had at least in this century.

still had problems escaping vandy campus cops, though, after he destroyed a campus emergency phone in a late night alcohol induced act - that's why he didn't play against Middle Tennessee in 2002 as a freshman.
