The Marshall Thundering Herd had their four game winning streak snapped and dropped to 15-13 (11-4 C-USA) on the season after being defeated by the UAB Blazers, 95-91, this past Thursday. Marshall played the Blazers to a close game throughout in this one but allowed UAB to use a late 6-2 run to gain a bit of separation and get the win. Marshall shot 44.2% from the field and won the turnover battle by a 12-8 margin. The Thundering Herd allowed the Blazers to shoot 47.0% from the field and 45.8% (11-24) from beyond the arc. Middle Tennessee had a 65-64 lead with just under five minutes left to play however, allowed Western Kentucky to go on a 6-1 run to take control of the game and get the win. Middle Tennessee shot 46.6% from the field and was outrebounded by Western Kentucky by a 40-29 margin. The Blue Raiders allowed the Hilltoppers to shoot 51.8% from the field and 53.3% (8-15) from beyond the arc. Leading the way for Middle Tennessee was Giddy Potts who had a double-double with 19 points, 12 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist. On the season, the Blue Raiders have been led by Giddy Potts (15.0 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 1.4 apg), Reggie Upshaw (13.1 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 2.2 apg, 1.4 spg), and Darnell Harris (12.2 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 1.3 apg). Marshall couldn’t get a big win agasint the C-USA leading UAB Blazers but has been one of the better teams in the conference this season with an offense that ranks 5th in the country in scoring offense and 9th in three-pointers made per game. Middle Tennessee has lost 3 of their last 4 games and have struggled on the offensive end as during this span, the Blue Raiders have averaged just 69.5 ppg. Middle Tennessee has a 10-3 record at home this season however, didn’t put much of a fight against Marshall earlier in the season in a 82-66 loss, and although Blue Raiders should be able to score some points on the weak Thundering Herd defense, I just don’t think Middle Tennessee will be able to get the win while covering in this one. i should have known better. meaningless game and nobody watching = 8 three pointers in the first half. Don't you love how this team can drop 49 in the first half without it's best player now that the pressure is off them. Put them in a championship game or a game of meaning with a decent audience and they fold like a cheap tent.
Still a big win. We were about to play our way out of the top 4. We needed this one.
I don't know where y'all are getting this dumb idea that this was a "meaningless" game. No, it was an EXTREMELY important game. Marshall was 2nd in the conference. Now, we're tied with 'em for that spot. We could be the #2 seed in the conference tournament, and if we are and UAB wins the tournament and goes to the NCAAs (or gets an at-large if someone that isn't us wins the CUSA tourney) then we have a great shot to go NIT. That is important. This game was the second-most important home game of our schedule. UAB was first, for obvious reasons, but beating Marshall is huge. Don't let the illusion of this game mask just how big of a win this was.

Congrats, Blue Raiders!! Very Important win, for sure! For NIT, think we have to make Championship Game and lose..cannot have an early exit. Think FAU and FIU is must win. No margin for error for top 4 seed in C-USA Tournament. If La Tech holds tonight, there's three way tie for second at 11-5 in conference. ODU is lurking a game back in loss column and winning tonight...really cannot afford a stumble next week. La Tech would also merit NIT discussion as well with their record as well.
A Marshall fan just called the Murphy Center a "small venue" -- they are dumb AND whiny. The Murphy Center has 3,000 more seats than Marshall's high school gym. And our announcers are just fine. I am sick and tired of listening (or rather reading) Marshall fans bitch and moan about our announcers complaining about obviously bad calls and annoyances when the other players FLOP EVERY PLAY and get big mouths. I for one am glad that for the most part our fans are not as stuck up as Marshall fans and do not wear tinted glasses as heavily tinted as some Herd fans. Rant over.
