To me, I don't want to be over dramatic, but this is a must win game if we are to battle for a top seed in the CUSA tourney.

Blue Raiders started hot, then cooled, then things turned into a slugfest. In the end, MT comes out in top, 78-72

Harris with another impressive performance. 21 and 4 for him. Giddy pretty much a non factor offensively with 7 but he definitely left his mark. UTEP changed their entire defensive scheme to shut him down.

really bad, uneven, to put it mildly, officiating. MT was the tougher team, rebounds, diving after balls, kept turnovers to a minimum

This team needs a point guard who can penetrate and dish. Wish we had Bruce Massey as he set the tone on defense and could create off the dribble. I'm still impressed with this team so far. They will improve and I think Ivory will get more confident down the stretch.

On a side note.... space, thanks for all the articles you post. I have been an avid lurker for many years and always have enjoyed your post.

Glad to see Gamble make a (small) contribution. Hopefully we'll see more from him.

And Phillips: It's time to show

Habersham is starting to show some flashes as well. I also think Copeland is getting better and more comfortable with playing his game and still playing within the system

I thought Copeland had some good minutes...in fact, a few times he was too good (too aggressive). Guys inside need to be ready at all times.

Meanwhile, the TV color guy was critical of Potts standing around on a lot of the offensive possessions.

We had a lot of guys that stood around and we had to put up crap shots as the shot clock ran out. But is was a good win against a team that is hard to defend. All UTEP had to do in the 2nd half was drive to the basket and they called fouls on us most every time. And, I have NEVER experienced so many un-called traveling calls as I saw in last nights game. Some would have even been called in NBA games and were not called.

We were commenting in the stands that it didn't look like Potts was trying too hard to get open. That said it looked like UTEP was committed to taking him out of the game. Still think that too often we are not trying to score until late in the possession and settling for low percentage jumpers..

That box and 1 they ran on Giddy probably got him frustrated, and our guys had no idea how to beat it

I thought Giddy looked tired at times. I don't care how much you practice, there is a difference between practice conditioning and games. I'm glad we got the win. I expect Giddy to have a big game tomorrow.

I mean, UTEP's whole scheme last night, at times, was to eliminate Giddy from the offensive flow. They put two guys on him, one of which had the sole purpose of keeping the ball out of his hands. They were in his face all night. Hard to break away from a double team like that. I would have been standing around a lot too in that situation. Maybe a little further away from the basket, though.

Still, it was a tough fight, which I actually think played into MT's hands down the stretch. They're not a finesse team. They're a smash mouth, grind it out type of team. They essentially beat Floyd at his own game.

The pupil schooling the teacher, if you will...again.
