Middle Tennessee State and football coach Derek Mason agreed to a five-year contract just before the Blue Raiders' season opener Saturday.

...The incentives do not include extension years, which was the case with for former coach Rick Stockstill, whose contract ran through 2029 after he was extended a year for going .500 or better, meeting academic requirements and staying NCAA compliant. MTSU paid a buyout of $5 million after he was fired.

"Those automatic extensions aren't built in to any contracts we've done recently," Massaro said. "What we did was realign bonuses and incentives to be a little more aggressive. We’ve stacked it a lot more to winning a conference championship, to making the CFP playoffs. Those are our goals. That’s the ultimate, if we can get into the CFP, that’s some rare thing. If we’re going to have those goals, lets reward those in contracts and make sure we’re clear.”

I can't freaking believe it. Fantastic.

No extensions and all acceptable bonuses. Not to mention a better buyout. Say we give him 3yrs, which is totally reasonable, and release him. We would only owe $2m. I don't see that happening, but man. Fantastic contract.

This plus the bump in assistant pool shows me a much more serious commitment. Glad CM and McP (I think it was more McP) listened to the fan outcry.

Yes, how it should be structured. But having to learn this lesson on the job sure did hurt us for a long time.

So, basically it's a $1M annual salary with a realistic chance for any given year for it to be between: $1.025M and 1.05M including bonuses. The academic bonus wasn't provided.

Great contract for both sides imo. They learned a lot of lessons that unfortunately set us back. The good news is they didn’t do it again.
