FOOTBALL ESPN College Football Playoff Game Ratings Went Into Toilet

Play on a night when even football nuts like me have other plans. Swap two national brand schools for schools that just don't have the national appeal. Ratings go down.

ESPN better get used to this, 8 of the next 12 semi-finals are on NYE.

is football on it's way out? We have seen ourselves how quickly things can change.

When I look at the constant negative drumbeat of propaganda in media and chants against football and constant calls to make America more like Europe, and attacks on Southern culture, it makes me wonder if American football will even be around in 30 years.

It will decline. I don't think it has anything to do with propaganda or Europe as concussions affect soccer just as much as football. It will decline because it's the nature of sports. Boxing and horse racing were the biggest sports in this country once upon a time. Baseball after that. Things change. Progress happens.

Crap, does this mean we will be stuck with Soccer?

If head trauma and the media covering it is contributing to a decreasing popularity of football, how does that explain the huge rise in popularity for UFC?

Yep, the mothership is sinking. Since all of their layoffs a few months ago, the quality of almost every facet of their programming has noticeably declined substantially. Only the basics of game broadcasts have remained the same. Even their online reporting and content has reached a low. About the only thing they have going for themselves there is the espn3 format which makes tons of games available. So is the price for paying conferences and pro-leagues outrageous sums of cash of their broadcast rights just as cord cutting was about to begin across the country. Of the basic cable channels, they charge far and away more per subscriber than most any other cable channel.

Speaking of which, this is likely a terrible time for C-USA to be back in broadcast negotiations. Maybe Fox Sports and CBS Sports will remain interested. I just hope C-USA makes sure to update and upgrade the digital platform to be more accessible, reliable, and unified in conference.

Broadcasting the playoffs on New Year's Eve was a huge ratings disaster. From what I understand, ESPN desperately fought the scheduling arrangement. The Rose Bowl and which other, sugar bowl?, are going to need to get their greed in check or they will bring down revenues for everyone including themselves. They all need to work it out on a rotation or something, but the playoff semifinals need to be on New Years Day where last year demonstrated the level of success that can be had. Maybe one day they'll get their heads out of their butts and also upgrade to at least 8 teams. Personally, I think 16 would be about right.

The ratings disaster can be attributed to a few things
1) The playoff is no longer "new"
2) A few of the games were not close
3) New Years Eve

I'm not sure the propaganda-movie "Concussion" (that seems to be a box office bomb so far) can be blamed for the rating disaster

I think one big mistake is making the play off part of the bowl games. Its silly, it should be separate from the bowl games. I think the best hope is expanding the playoffs to increase the ratings and then time the games a bit better.

Heck, many of the New Year's day game (early games) were not sold out and now I have no idea what game I am watching because the "name" of the bowl game form a tradition perspective has lost its luster. The only bowl games that have credibility and seem to sell out are Rose, Sugar. All the others need the right match-up or be in the play off to generate a great crowd (Peach, Alamo)

This isn't that hard.

New Year's Eve is maybe the one day of the year that people aren't going to watch college football. Many folks who would otherwise be home are out, and those that are home are entertaining or watching the NYE shows. They aren't watching football.

You play these games on a Monday, like today, and you get monster #'s.

Having 2 non-traditional powers didn't help either. The casual college football fan from across the country probably doesn't know what a Clemson is, and Michigan State is the 2nd most popular team from Michigan.
