FOOTBALL CUSA D Line preview

I heavily disagree with their assessment. I feel like they are overreacting to the loss of Brady, big time.

Rosheem Collins is a beast, potential all-conference selection. Jordan Ferguson should be even better this year, and Poydras/Manciel are budding stars themselves. We've got amazing talent and depth at DT and that alone will make our DL a force to be reckoned with.

We obviously are lacking in the DE department and it'll probably be touch and go for most of the season; however; I trust Shafer enough to be creative with the pass rush and pressure the QB one way or another. We will send corners, linebackers, safeties, whatever it takes.

I'm personally STOKED about the potential our defense has this year. I said last year we would be a top 50 defense when that was probably not a popular comment at all, and look how well the D turned out.

This year, we have the potential to be even better. My only concern is last year I believe we caught a lot of teams off guard with how improved our D was. I believe most teams in the conference thought it would be same ole' same ole' and didn't change their game plans much from the previous year.

Fast forward to 2018 and everyone now knows MT's defense is not a push over. Teams also have a year of film to look for weaknesses against Shafer's D too. Going to be an interesting year to say the least, lots of story lines and dynamic factors to consider.

Another interesting dynamic. Over the last 20 years, if we had these puzzle pieces going into the season like we do this year, we would all be predicting a championship. Stud senior year QB, experienced OL, suffocating D. We are winning the conference this year, right?!?!?!

As fans though we are so used to disappointment, let-downs, and getting wrecked by local rivals that there's literally no buzz about the season despite having our strongest team in years....

Sad state of affairs.

That's because we all already know how it ends. We've seen it all before, many times.

Phil Steele is hitting newsstands this week, twitter is ramping up with football previews, etc, etc etc - this is the time of the year that I usually start psyching myself up for football.

I just can't generate any enthusiasm for this program at this time. The overwhelming involuntary reaction when I try to think positively of 2018 MT Football is "why bother".

The big problem last season was that the back up QB's were terrible. If the back up QB's were decent then the team could have won a few more games while Brent was out.

Instead, we watched one interception after another as each game slipped away.

Hard to bring in quality back ups when the coaches son has the job locked down for 5 or 6 years

I do think we finally signed some quality QB's last class with the kid from Georgia and Chance Nolan. And I still have not given up on John Turner.
