Former Ouachita star to coach Lady Lions

Chrissy Givens is coming home to Ouachita Parish High School.

The former Lady Lion star will be introduced as Ouachita's new girl’s basketball coach on Thursday. Givens takes over for Amber Obaze-Ford, who accepted the head-coaching job at Summerfield.

“We’re excited to welcome Chrissy back to the Ouachita family,” Ouachita principal Larry Long said. “Chrissy has been a winner in everything she’s ever done. She understands the expectations we have for this program and what it takes to reach them.” .....

...Givens shattered records during her Ouachita career. She made the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s All-State team four years in-a-row — a first for Class 5A — and graduated with 2,500 points scored and 1,000 rebounds.

Ouachita finished Givens’ senior season in 2003 as the state runner-up to Southwood, and she received Class 5A MVP, District 2-5A MVP and the News-Star’s All-NELA Player of the Year honors. Givens, who was the valedictorian of her senior class, was also a two-time winner of the News-Star’s Paul Martin Award.

Givens played collegiately at Middle Tennessee from 2003-07, where she was a two-time Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Sun Belt Tournament MVP. The Blue Raiders won four consecutive conference tournaments with Givens on the roster and played in the NCAA Women’s Tournament each year.

The Phoenix Mercury selected Givens in the third round of the 2007 WNBA Draft. Givens played for the Detroit Shock and overseas.

“I think this hire is going to bring another level of excitement to our program,” Long said. “We lost some key players from last year’s team, but we have some young talent, and I think Chrissy will do a great job developing it.”
