...Conference USA's Executive Board, composed of college presidents, issued a statement Thursday saying it would take no action on UAB's membership until the fall.

According to the statement, "at its fall meeting, the board expects UAB to submit for review a comprehensive plan addressing the key elements of UAB's football program going forward. No additional action from the board is expected until that time."

C-USA officials were scheduled to discuss the school's membership on Monday while meeting in Dallas, but decided to act quickly after UAB's announcement. C-USA officials told UAB more than a month ago that without football, the school would have to leave the league.

C-USA commissioner Britton Banowsky reacted with enthusiasm to UAB's decision, but the league's Executive Committee was careful not to give Blazers a blank check, given the many unanswered questions.

UAB likely won't field a team until 2017 and it isn't certain it will be able to play right away in the Football Bowl Subdivision. If the NCAA requires UAB to start in the Football Championship Subdivision, it would not rejoin the FBS until 2020 and not be bowl eligible until 2021.....
